Sandalwood is one of the most ancient essential oils, and certainly one of the most outstanding. It has been used for thousands of years in ancient India for ritualistic purposes. It helps to cool and energize mind and body. Its effects are mainly on the nervous system and the skin, although it has a positive influence also on respiration, digestion and circulation.
Sandalwood purifies the blood and is a good anti-inflammatory agent, especially for the urogenital organs. It accelerates the speed of metabolic functioning, helps digestion of fat and transformation of fat deposits into sugar (cellulitis), and enhances hormonal production in men. Sandalwood diminishes fever and makes it easier to support heat and thirst. It acts as a mild sedative and may be used to ease pain. Sandalwood may have application in all manner of skin conditions, and generally acts as a rejuvenator and nourisher of the skin. It reveals its miraculous ‘cosmetic’ properties.
In a spiritual sense Sandalwood transforms sexual energy and opens the heart for the Divine Intelligence in man. It has been traditionally used for prayer and meditation. Here indeed is wisdom of the body-spirit of the sacred.
