I am firmly convinced that Helichrysum Essential Oil (Helichrysum italicum – also known as Immortelle and Everlasting), is one of the most under-rated oils in aromatherapy. We get nothing but positive feedback from therapists who try this oil, although despite being very safe, it seldom seems to find itself on the ‘recommended core list’ of most schools.
My friend Malte who founded the Oshadhi line of Essential oils, believes there to be nothing comparable in aromatherapy. ‘This precious and rare oil excels as a blood purifier, and stimulates liver, spleen, pancreas and gall bladder. Helichrysum increases lymphatic drainage and is without doubt the strongest anti-congestive agent so far found in nature. In this regard it works wonders, particularly in cases of blood congestion such as bruising or thrombosis. According to medical research, its anti-congestive property is four times the effect of arnica oil.’
‘Helichrysum enhances arterial circulation, helps to prevent coronary problems, and regulates blood pressure. It is also effective against certain bacterial infections; while arthritis, polyarthritis and rheumatism can also be treated with Helichrysum. This oil is an excellent skin purifier, with additional regenerative, wound-healing, and anti-inflammatory properties. It is well indicated in cases of eczema, acne, abscesses, burns and cuts.’
‘The high concentrations of special compounds called ‘betadiones’, which are rarely found in nature, are supposed to be linked to its healing properties, physically as well as spiritually. The oil is often used against depression, lethargy, nervous exhaustion, and stress-related disorders including post-traumatic stress. Since Helichrysum has sedating properties it blends well with Lavender and Petitgrain oils. It can be used against migraine and headaches, especially those stemming from liver problems.
‘From a spiritual perspective, Helichrysum in its fluidifying nature of high vibrational energy can be seen as the ‘super-liquid’ floral liberator of physical as well as psycho-spiritual blocks and clots or old scars that obstruct the flow of our subtle self-healing energies. This is a magical rod for body and soul — a balm on the bruises of unhealed wounds.’
Interestingly many of the practitioners we supply are acupuncturists who use this oil in the event that a blood vessel gets punctured. One described its effect as ‘miraculous’.
I have had good success using and recommending Helichrysum neat on the skin for sebaceous cysts.
